As a woman in the medical field, Dr. Cherry Ostrager, is what I would call ‘a woman of all trades’. She has taken the initiative to get a feel of certain areas in her practice that are known to be an issue in our everyday lives. Items such as allergies, back pain and mental health are the challenges we endure each day – especially in midlife years (over 40). This method has afforded her the ability to instantly pinpoint the culprit of each patient’s problem before treating the underlying condition. With her innumerable skills and comprehensive approach to healthcare, Dr. Ostrager can devise inclusive diagnosis, treatment and management plans that successfully put each of her patients on the road to a speedy recovery.
I met Dr. Ostrager at a networking event and was blown away by her spunk; I’m impressed with how she went full speed ahead to go after what she wanted in life. That is the tone of our talk show as well as our online magazine. She stayed laser focused on her passion and extended herself in areas that would have a positive impact on the lives of others; particularly, men and women that are over 40 and over 50 years of age. As a midlife woman myself, I can tell you that most conditions hit us when we are turning 40. Don’t ask me why, things just begin to go awry around this time (smiling). We can begin to have back and neck pains as well as hormonal changes that can induce mental conditions such as anxiety, depression, even bipolar disorder – some can even experience perimenopausal symptoms (having symptoms of approaching menopause) at this time.
Dr. Ostrager treats anyone from the age of 16 and up but being experienced and trained in midlife issues, she is equipped to answer frequently asked questions such as ‘what are the symptoms of pre-menopause; what causes hair loss in midlife men and women or why can’t I gain or lose weight’; she can even decipher when someone is dealing with middle-age depression and anxiety as opposed to something else; this is huge and is what sets her apart from other family doctors.
Dr. Ostrager has been in practice for over 22 years. She received her medical degree from The University of Health Sciences in Kansas City, Missouri and is board certified in Family Medicine. She did her family practice residency at Southside Hospital/Stony Brook University in New York and then went on to complete her family practice residency at St. Barnabas Hospital in Bronx, New York. She also received her bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences at Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, New York. Prior to medical school, Dr. Ostrager did graduate work at CW Post College in Long Island in Advanced Cellular Biology; she’s really something (smiling)! She is also on staff at Lenox Hill Hospital/Northwell Health System and Mount Sinai/Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan; it doesn’t get any better than this!
Dr. Ostrager opened her private practice back in 2001 and is conveniently located in midtown Manhattan on East 57th Street in New York City. She is the founder of ‘Midtown East Family Medicine PLLC’. The name is quite appropriate for her location and is said to provide personalized, caring, compassionate and comprehensive medical care for the community.
Because of her adept knowledge in musculoskeletal pain, Dr. Ostrager can identify with each patient’s complaint on back discomforts. She takes extreme measures in isolating the issue by performing a thorough history and physical exam, which entails lab work and EMG/Nerve conduction studies. She also has a spinal X-ray and MRI done to rule out underlying causes such as radiculopathy, neuropathy, polyneuropathy and herniated disc or other musculoskeletal conditions. Once this is done, a referral consultation may be recommended with one of her high-end network specialists (orthopedic surgeon and neurologist) to devise a strategic diagnosis, treatment and/or pain management plan. Time is taken to separate and target each patient’s musculoskeletal condition before a diagnosis is revealed and as mentioned above, this avoids unnecessary run-around for the individual and ultimately puts him or her in a good position for a speedy recovery.
Dr. Ostrager also offers allergy testing. Annoying allergy symptoms such as nasal congestion, watery itchy eyes, cough, sinusitis, headaches, fatigue and the like are the next beast that interferes with our everyday lives. Like back pains, her office dives deep down as it is important to identify what the patient is allergic to rather than use antihistamines unnecessarily. She does what they call premium percutaneous allergy testing using pure allergen extracts from a very reputable worldwide allergy company. She checks for multitude of allergens such as grass, trees, weeds, molds, animals and food – allergens which causes our body to release a chemical called ‘histamine’ thus causing these miserable allergy symptoms that disrupts our quality of life. Allergy testing is done at her office in as little as 15 minutes with same-day test results; treatment options are then discussed.
Although Dr. Ostrager is known as a family practitioner who treats all aspects of family medicine, she strategically chose the areas that are most important to our everyday lives (allergies, back pain and mental health). Midtown East Family Medicine PLLC is in the luxurious Galleria building on 115 East 57th Street near Lexington Avenue (Suite 1460) in midtown Manhattan. She accepts most insurances and has flexible office hours to cater to her patient’s busy schedule. Each of her patients is known to get their allocated time to make sure all their questions are answered and that they fully understand every aspect of their medical care. Her office motto emphasizes the importance of preventative medicine, early detection and screening exams in all age groups with emphasis on women patients over 40 and over 50 years of age.
